Dumpster Fire at 1151 Front Street

Station 18 was dispatched to a dumpster fire at 1151 Front Street.  The caller could see the fire from her house.  Fire Police Captain 1809 was first on location and reported a fully involved dumpster next to the building.  Asst Chief 1802 arrived on location, confirmed the report from 1809, and established command.  Personnel were concerned with the proximity of the dumpster to the building and possible fire spread.  Engine 1811 arrived shortly after the 1802 and went to work.

A 1 3/4" attack line was stretched and knocked the bulk of the fire down.  Entry was forced into the vacant building to check inside.  Thankfully, there was no fire extension on the interior or exterior of the building.  Hidden, isolated pockets in the burned debris continued to flare up and due to the position of the dumpster and proximity to the building, the dumpster could not be opened and the contents removed for overhaul.  Engine 1812 laid a supply line to Engine 1811 and the dumpster was filled with water using the deck gun to thoroughly soak the contents.  The building roof was also thoroughly covered with water due to the embers from the fire at its peak.  The cause remains under investigation.
