Dwelling Fire at 740 Third Street

740 3rd StStation 18 was dispatched with Station 2 for a dwelling fire at 740 Third Street, Catasauqua Boro.  The caller reported seeing smoke and flames from upstairs.  Lehigh County Radio was receiving multiple calls as well.  Chief 1801 was first on scene, reported smoke from a 2 1/2 story dwelling, made it a working fire, and struck the 2nd alarm due to manpower issues given the time of day.  Engine 1811, Truck 231, and Engine 211 responded initially.  The 2nd alarm added Engine 3711, Engine 3612, Cascade 591, Rescue 1141 (RIT), and a unit from Medic 75.

Engine 1811 assumed first due and wrapped the hydrant at Liberty and Third Streets before proceeding in.  Catasauqua Police were busy evacuating residents from the apartments.  A quick primary search for any further occupants was negative and the fire was located at the top of the third floor steps.  A single line was stretched to the third floor steps and the fire was knocked down.  Smoke was banked down to the floor level and was ventilated through two windows on the third floor.  Ovehaul was completed and extension beyond the fire room was negative.  The cause is under investigation.

This fire was minor due to quick detection and a fast knockdown by fire personnel.  Had the occupants not detected this fire early, it could have grown significantly and caused much more damage, potentially spreading to nearby dwellings and threatening lives.  Great job by everyone on scene.
